Why Chocolat, Sugar Sugar Rune's Main Character, Doesn't Need Help?

Tuesday, May 30, 2017
"Tell us what we should do to properly greet our teacher."
- Chocolat Meilleure / Kato

The above quote was said by Chocolat, the main female character, in episode 5 of the Sugar Sugar Rune (#ad) anime and manga series by Moyoco Anno. What is wrong or what’s the problem with this quote?

Chocolat Meilleure / Kato addresses the above quote to this talking magical fortune-telling book. Her homeroom teacher, Mochizuki-sensei, will visit her house to talk to Robin, her guardian. When she finds the magical book, she asks it for help by saying the aforementioned quote.

But, seriously, why does Kato need this magical book to tell her what to do? Why is this even an issue? Yes, Rockin’ Robin said he will be a little late in getting back home to talk to the teacher, but so what?

What’s with a few minutes or even an hour of waiting? And how hard is it to greet someone? It’s not like Chocolat is shy or anything. We know how outgoing she is and what kind of personality she has (loud, brash, outspoken, unafraid).

So, what could she have done then if Mochizuki-sensei arrives before Robin? She and Vanilla Mieux / Ice (her best friend who also lives with her) can take her to the living room and sit her down on a chair. Ice can then offer her tea or coffee or whatever beverage they have as well as some food.

They can then explain that Robin will be a bit late. Then they can make small talk with her while they wait for Robin to show up. So, how is it that Chocolat needs some fortune-telling book to tell her that?

In fact, I’d say said magic book just ended up causing trouble for her because she somehow got it into her head that it was a very good idea to have Duke, her familiar, and Blanca, Vanilla’s familiar, pretend to be Robin and entertain their teacher thanks to what the book told her in answer to her query.

If they’d just stayed put in the living room talking to Mochizuki-sensei while waiting for Robin to arrive, none of the pointless and contrived things that happened in this episode would have had to happen.

Also, I have to wonder why Robin has a magical fortune-telling book anyway (since Kato found said book while rummaging around in the cupboards of Robin’s house)?

The guy doesn’t seem to be the type to use one especially since the book was hidden away. Was it a gift to him or something? If so, why’d he keep it then? What do you think about all this?

What To Hate About Sugar Sugar Rune Episode 5?

Wednesday, May 24, 2017
What happened in episode 5 of the Sugar Sugar Rune anime and manga series by Moyoco Anno? What’s there to like and dislike about this particular episode?

(*Warning for possible spoilers for said show)

If only one word can be used to describe Sugar Sugar Rune (#ad) episode 5, then that word would have to be ‘useless’. We can also use ‘pointless’. ‘Filler’ definitely fits as well because, yup, this episode was nothing but filler.
Anime, Sugar Sugar Rune, Reviews, Rockin' Robin, Mochizuki-sensei, Chocolat Kato, Chocolat Meilleure, Vanilla Ice, Vanilla Mieux, manga, moyoco anno
Seriously, it served absolutely no point whatsoever. It wasn’t humorous, fun, or amusing though it desperately tries to be. All its attempts just fall flat though because everything seems contrived like Chocolat Meilleure / Kato making Duke, her familiar, and Blanca, her best friend’s familiar, pretend to be Robin, their guardian, to entertain their teacher instead of waiting for him to get back home.

This episode didn’t even tell us anything new. It just repeated what we already know like how Vanilla Mieux / Ice has no trouble getting hearts for the Queen Selection Contest because guys find her cute and smart and generally likable. In contrast, Kato can’t get any hearts, but, again, we already know that.

This epi also told us that Mochizuki-sensei, their homeroom teacher, is in love with Rockin’ Robin, which we already know from, like, the first episode when we first met said teacher.

So, basically, this entire episode could have been deleted and the audience wouldn’t have missed a thing because it didn’t serve to further the plot at all and wasn’t even the least bit fun. What do you think?

What To Like And Dislike About The Hayato-Manabe Scene In Sugar Sugar Rune?

Thursday, May 18, 2017
In episode 4 of the Sugar Sugar Rune (#ad) anime and manga series by Moyoco Anno, Karen Manabe and Hayato-kun, classmates of the main characters, have a bit of a romantic scene courtesy of Chocolat and Vanilla, the main characters. What can be said about this scene? What’s there to like and dislike about this scene?

Thanks to Chocolat Meilleure / Kato running around using the Lipstick of Truth on people without their explicit permission, Karen Manabe ends up messing up the Romeo and Juliet play that she’d worked so hard on. She also ends up inadvertently revealing her feelings for Hayato-kun.

Understandably, an embarrassed and hurt (way to mess up, Chocolat) Manabe runs off. Hayato follows after her. Chocolat and Vanilla Mieux / Ice do the same. The latter 2 hide up in a tree and watch what was supposed to be a private scene between 2 people who needed to sort things out between them.

I didn’t find that amusing at all. I mean, why does Kato and Ice have to intrude on something that has nothing to do with them? Why are they acting like such voyeurs and meddling in affairs that don’t and shouldn’t concern them?

Oh, sure, one can argue that they were there to help. But, while they did use their magic, I really don’t think what they did can be called helping. I mean, they made the cherry blossoms (sakuras) bloom. But, so what? Why should that change anything?
Anime, Chocolat Kato, Chocolat Meilleure, Hayato-kun, Karen Manabe, Sugar Sugar Rune, Vanilla Ice, Vanilla Mieux, moyoco anno, manga
Sure, Hayato and Manabe met when they were kids and when the flowers were in bloom, but why does having the flowers bloom now change anything between them?

Technically, realistically, even if the flowers bloomed, it shouldn’t change anything between the 2, like if Hayato doesn’t have feelings for Manabe, then seeing the flowers bloom wouldn’t suddenly make him fall for her now, would it?

Regardless of that, I did think the scene between the 2 was pretty cute. And I’m glad that the show decided to leave things ambiguous on Hayato’s part. We know that Manabe likes him, but we don’t know for sure if Hayato feels the same way because he doesn’t say anything.

I think that’s fine and it’s definitely much better than having him explicitly say that he returns her feelings because that kind of thing can’t always happen. Sometimes, you might like someone, but that person just doesn’t feel the same way about you.

And that sucks and that’s horrible, but that’s life. So, at the very least, the Hayato-Manabe scene had a bit of realism in it. What do you think?

What's Wrong With Chocolat Using The Lipstick Of Truth In Sugar Sugar Rune?

Friday, May 12, 2017
In episode 4 of the Sugar Sugar Rune anime and manga series by Moyoco Anno, Chocolat, the main character, gets her hands on an item known as the Lipstick of Truth.

When used on someone, it can compel them to tell the truth, to share their true feelings. What’s wrong with this? What’s the problem with Chocolat using this item?
Chocolat Kato, Chocolat Meilleure, Hayato-kun, Karen Manabe, Sugar Sugar Rune, Vanilla Ice, Vanilla Mieux, moyoco anno, anime, manga
The scenes with the Lipstick of Truth are likely meant to be humorous, so the audience will laugh at the antics of the characters, but, IMHO, there is absolutely nothing amusing in these scenes.

I don’t like how Chocolat Meilleure / Kato (#ad) used the Lipstick of Truth because she just went around and used it on anyone she wanted to without asking them for their permission. There was no consent at all.

They didn’t even know anything about the lipstick or what it was capable of. It was just used on them all of the sudden without their consent or permission. How is that a good thing? It’s despicable, isn’t it?

There are some things that people don’t want to talk about. It isn’t fair, right or just that Chocolat should force people to speak about their true feelings without even asking them if that’s what they want to do.

It’s their body, their life, their feelings, so they should have the freedom to choose what they want to do instead of having the main character go around forcing them to tell the truth for her sole amusement.

The only person who knew what Chocolat was up to and who was willing to have the lipstick used on her was Vanilla Mieux / Ice. It was her choice to use the lipstick, but what about everyone else that Chocolat used it on? Did she even think about the consequences for her rash actions?

Thanks to her using the Lipstick of Truth on Karen Manabe, she ended up embarrassing herself, not just in front of the guy she likes (Hayato-kun), but also in front of her friends, classmates and everyone else watching their rendition of Romeo and Juliet.

Seriously, Chocolat should be ashamed of herself for what she did. She should be the one apologizing for ruining the play. But, no. Instead, we have Manabe apologizing for something she didn’t do, for something that’s really all Kato’s fault.

If Chocolat hadn’t used the lipstick, if she hadn’t butted her nose in other people’s business, the play wouldn’t have to be ruined. Seeing Manabe crying and saying “I’m sorry” makes you feel bad for her especially because she really worked hard on this play.

She was so enthusiastic and she really wanted it to be a success. Now, thanks to Chocolat’s rash actions, everything was ruined. If anyone should be apologizing here, it should be Kato and not Manabe. What do you think?

How Come Chocolat Can't Clean Her Own Room In Sugar Sugar Rune?

Saturday, May 06, 2017
In episode 4 of the Sugar Sugar Rune (#ad) anime and manga series by Moyoco Anno, Chocolat is too much of a brat to clean her own room. What’s wrong with that?

Seriously, why can’t Chocolat Meilleure / Kato clean her own room? Why does her own best friend have to be the one to do it for her?
Chocolat Meilleure / Kato, Vanilla Mieux / Ice, moyoco anno, sugar sugar rune, anime, manga
Are we supposed to be amused that Kato can’t even clean her own room, that she’d rather let her best friend do it instead of doing it herself?

Vanilla Mieux / Ice is supposed to be her best friend, not her servant. Seriously, Chocolat was acting like such a brat in this scene. Vanilla asked for her help in cleaning her room, but Kato refused.

She even messed up the room further. She wasn’t even grateful that Ice was doing the work for her. Chocolat really came across as unlikable in this scene. What do you think about her actions?
