What's Wrong With Frigg's Clue To Find Loki (Ragnarok Manhwa)?

ragnarok: into the abyss, manhwa, loki
The main characters of Ragnarok: Into The Abyss manhwa are tasked to find someone with their only clue being that this person is "human and not". What could possibly be wrong with said clue?

In Volume 3 of the graphic novel, the Norse queen of the gods and the mother of Balder, the goddess Frigg, shows up to talk to both Chaos and Fenris Fenrir.

As the trio talk, we find out that, apparently, the fate of the world rests on Chaos' shoulders and that he's the only one capable of saving said world.

Why this is the case, I have no idea. But, apparently and supposedly, this is his destiny. Yeah, right (insert eye-roll here?). Let's just forget that for now and get back to what this post is about.

So, Frigg then says that before the main characters can get started with their quest, they first need to "find the one who is both human and not". The protagonists have no idea who this could possibly be. But the readers know that this statement refers to Loki thanks to the very helpful image of said assassin that appears right beside those words.

However, even if we know who the words refer to, we still don't know exactly how and why this is the case. Why is he considered the one who is human and not? How can he be both human and not? I suppose we'll just have to wait to find out when we get to that part of the story.

Well, that's what I would like to say, but, unfortunately, we got to the part of the plot where this should have been explained (when Loki meets up with Chaos and the others and ends up joining their party and it's revealed that he's the one they're looking for) and there is no explanation at all.

ragnarok: into the abyss, manhwa, chaos, frigg, fenris fenrir, goddess
This point is simply overlooked and glossed over, practically forgotten as no one bothers to question Loki.

Let's just go back to the trio's conversation before this baffles us further.

Frigg adds that they need to find this person because he's necessary for their success and survival, implying that the heroes will fail in their quest without this guy.

Frigg then says that she wishes she can say more, but, apparently, for some unknown reason, she just can't. Yeah, very believable, no?

Chaos then asks his mother how they can possibly find the one who is human and not. Frigg's answer is simply the word 'west'. Very helpful, no?

With Frigg's departure, the only thing our heroes are left with are the clues that they're supposed to head west. And therein lies the problem. Seriously, look at those supposed clues.

How can anyone even classify those as clues, much less helpful and useful clues? Let's start with the 'head west' clue. While it's good that the main characters don't have to search the entire world, the west isn't exactly a small area.

ragnarok: into the abyss, manhwa, loki, odin, frigg, asgard. norse mythology, gods, goddess
Frigg didn't even give them an address, just a general direction. How can that help them?

They could traverse the entirety of the western area of the world, but if they don't know exactly who they're looking for, well, how can they find that person then?

And that brings us to the 'human and not' clue. This might be the worst clue of them all. How are they expected to find Loki with such a clue?

It's not like the guy will be walking around with a sign helpfully informing our heroes who he is. What, are the protagonists going to walk around and ask everyone that they come across if said person is the one who is human and not?

Even if they get a response from people with such a question, how will they know that that person is telling the truth? You know that there's something really wrong with the clues and that said clues are really useless when you have one of the main characters agreeing with you.

In Volume 4 of the manhwa, Chaos, Fenris Fenrir and Iris Irine arrive in the city of Prontera. The trio have no idea how or even where to start looking for the one who is human and not. Fenris herself says, "I wish Frigg could have given us more of a clue" and "we don't even know what he looks like". That is exactly the point and the problem.

ragnarok: into the abyss, manhwa, fenris fenrir
So, with such clues, how did you think they were going to find Loki? What did you think was going to happen? To say the next scene was rather disappointing would be putting it mildly, to say the least.

With such less-than-helpful clues, it's no wonder that we had to have a deus ex machina in order to have the trio meet up with Loki. Perhaps that's the only term that can be used to describe what happened next. Why, you ask?

It's because the protagonists didn't even have a hard time finding the guy. You think they would have had a hard time especially considering the clues (if you could even call them that) they've been given.

But no. Instead of having a hard time, the person they're looking for is practically handed to them in a silver platter. That's how easily they were able to find him. And the whole 'human and not' clue didn't even factor into it. Or, to be more precise, that's how easily Loki found them.

If he hadn't found them, they most likely never would have been able to find him, not with such useless clues. But, if you really look at it, even the way the assassin found Chaos and the others could be said to be questionable and bordering on deus ex machina (actually, maybe it is really deus ex machina).

ragnarok: into the abyss, manhwa, loki, norse mythology
This is because of how easily he found the main characters; he didn't have reliable clues either. But that's discussed in another post, so, if you're interested, just check out the tags below and/or this post.

Anyway, Loki easily found Chaos just by seeing the symbol on the back of the latter's shirt. So, how ridiculous does that sound? After all, anyone could wear shirts with that symbol, no?

Besides, for all Loki knew, maybe Chaos just bought that shirt somewhere or maybe Chaos borrowed that from someone or something.

What do you think? Do you think that Frigg should have given the main characters useful and reliable clues in order to find Loki? Were you disappointed at how Chaos and the others met up with the assassin? What do you think is the meaning of the clue that Loki is both human and not?

Chaos, Talk To Fenris Fenrir (Ragnarok Manhwa)

ragnarok: into the abyss, manhwa, fenris fenrir, chaos
This post is also known as "Chaos, why won't you talk to Fenris Fenrir?" and "What's so wrong with talking and asking questions?".

What are some of the many instances in Ragnarok: Into The Abyss manhwa that can make you say these possible titles? What can be so frustrating and even annoying with the lack of conversation between Chaos and Fenris Fenrir?

From reading the graphic novel, we know that Chaos does not remember his past, that he's missing memories of his past life as the god Balder. We know that Fenris knows about Balder's past since she was also there with him 1000 years ago.

As such, the question now is why won't the resident main character of this comic talk to the woman who knows about his past? Why can't Chaos ask her to tell him about his past, to help him regain his memories, to explain exactly what happened a thousand years ago?
ragnarok: into the abyss, manhwa, fenris fenrir, chaos
What's so wrong with having Chaos ask these perfectly valid questions? You'd think he would have been interested in knowing the answers to these questions because it's about his past, which he has forgotten.

Doesn't he want to remember any of this? And what about the readers? The readers also need to know about these things and yet the graphic novel doesn't seem to care about that at all because we still haven't gotten a clear explanation.

We don't even know what's wrong with Chaos and why he doesn't want to ask Fenrir questions about all of this. There were so many instances in the manhwa wherein we could have been shown a scene that had Chaos asking Fenris questions and having the latter answer everything in the form of a flashback.

For instance, when the two first met in Volume 2, all the explanations were glossed over instead of being stated clearly. All we got was an annoying summary that didn't even tell us much at all. Rather than demanding answers and asking all sorts of questions, Chaos does nothing of the sort and the scene soon ends in favor of focusing on Sara Irine trying to destroy the city of Fayon.

ragnarok: into the abyss, manhwa, loki, chaos
Another scene in Volume 3 is even more frustrating than the aforementioned one. In this particular scene, we have Chaos and Fenris Fenrir talking alone before Frigg soon shows up.

Why didn't the protagonist take advantage of this opportunity and start asking Fenris all sorts of questions about his past, especially focusing on things that we, the readers, don't know yet?

Instead of getting satisfactory answers, all we got was a mere rehash of things that we already knew such as how Freya was the current ruler of Asgard.

The 2 also talked about Frigg being Balder's mother, but, considering the goddess soon shows up and could have explained all that herself, was it even necessary to talk about her? They could have talked about the many other things that needed to be explained.

Speaking of wasted opportunities, there's another scene like that in Volume 4 of the comic. This scene shows us Chaos in Prontera, currently alone and lost in thought. He was busy thinking about what Frigg had told him when they met as well as wondering about his past as Balder and his destiny.

He was wondering about the gap in his memories, knowing there were still many things that he did not know and could not recall. Instead of showing us this pretty pointless scene, why didn't the main character just go see Fenrir and ask her what she knows about his past because she clearly knows something?

chaos, fenris fenrir, ragnarok: into the abyss, manhwa
If he really wants to remember all his forgotten memories, then why is he just standing there doing nothing?

He keeps wracking his brains for his lost past, but if he really can't remember by himself, then why won't he ask the woman who knows? Why can't he ask her to tell him more about his past as a god and what really happened a thousand years ago?

If you thought that scene was frustrating and even annoying, then you might not have seen this other scene from Volume 4.

With this particular scene, it really seems as if nothing could compare to it in terms of sheer frustration and annoyance. This might really be where you can scream the post title and where you might want to shake the main character just to ask him and get him to talk to Fenris already.

This is the part of the manhwa where Loki confronts Chaos. This is where we find out that the symbol on the back of Chaos' shirt means rain and that it is also a sign of the ancient Dragon Knights.

As expected, the main character himself and even Iris Irine don't know anything about this, but the awesome and cool Fenris Fenrir appears to know a lot about these Dragon Knights.

We are told that Chaos apparently has a connection to these knights just because he's wearing a shirt with their symbol on it. I know this is probably the case, but don't you think that the characters jumped to conclusions about all this way too easily?

Was it logical and believable that they should think that the main character was raised and trained by a Dragon Knight just because he's wearing the shirt he's wearing? Seriously? How would they even know for sure? I mean, where did Chaos even get his clothes anyway? For all anyone knows, he could have just found the shirt or bought it somewhere.

While that's certainly upsetting, what's more aggravating is what happens next. Chaos soon speaks up and says that Loki knows more about his past than anyone else and he wants answers from the assassin. He then keeps asking the guy to tell him more about his past.

ragnarok: into the abyss, manhwa, fenris fenrir, chaos
Hello, Chaos, what could possibly be wrong with you? Do you think he might be blind or deaf or something? Because, really, why couldn't he ask Fenris Fenrir? Why won't he talk to her and ask her about this?

She was the one who was with Balder 1000 years ago and she was the one who just explained all about the Dragon Knights and made all these speculations.

She clearly knows about these things, so why isn't Chaos asking her? Huge sigh. How aggravating and frustrating, no? Let's just move on to Volume 8 before that particular scene irritates us further.

In Volume 8, the protagonists get separated from each other and it just so happens that Chaos and Fenris end up together while Iris, Lidia and Loki are somewhere else. The 2 could have taken that opportunity to talk to each other. Chaos should have asked Fenrir about his past and maybe we could have even gotten a flashback or two.

Instead all we get is a disappointing and pointless scene between the 2 as all the focus is placed on Lidia, Iris and Loki. That wouldn't have been so bad if we got some more plot out of it, but, regrettably, all we get is yet another pointless scene.

Sure, it's pretty funny, but it would still have been so much better if we got all our questions answered instead. Do you think Chaos should have spoken to Fenris Fenrir and asked her to tell him about his past? Do you think we should have gotten a flashback about what happened a thousand years ago?

Why Chaos And Matthew Can't Be Best Friends (Ragnarok Manhwa)?

Friday, February 28, 2014
chaos, matthew, ragnarok: into the abyss, manhwa
How can Chaos and Matthew from Ragnarok: Into The Abyss manhwa be best friends? What is so unbelievable and wrong about this? Why can't those 2 be best friends?

The aforementioned graphic novel first reveals that Matthew and Chaos are apparently best friends in Volume 7. This was when Himmelmez makes the protagonist fight against his supposed best friend.

Chaos refuses to fight and hurt Matthew by virtue of the supposed fact that they were apparently best friends.

As such, he lets himself get hurt without fighting back or defending himself against the onslaught of the blows. What's wrong with the aforementioned scene? To answer that question, let's go to where we are first introduced to Matthew. This in Volume 2 of the comic.

During the scenes centered in the city of Fayon, we know that Matthew and Chaos know each other because this is what we are shown as we read the graphic novel. However, there is absolutely no indication at all that the 2 are close friends, much less best friends.

In fact, they come across as casual acquaintances at best with the way they hardly interacted with each other during the Fayon scenes. There is nothing particular that stands out and makes one think that 'Chaos and Matthew are really close and they are such good friends'.

We only ever see an indication of their supposed best friends status when we get a flashback in Volume 7. Even that flashback wasn't able to show their supposed friendship, not to the fullest extent anyway.

In short, it's really not believable that those 2 are best friends especially when you take into consideration the apparent fact that Chaos didn't seem all that affected by Matthew's death. Sure, he was sad that the guy died. But he was also sad when Peony Irine, the 2 children and the other people of Fayon died.

ragnarok: into the abyss, manhwa, chaos, matthew
He wasn't even shown properly mourning the death of his supposed best friend. After the Fayon scenes are over, we never see Chaos mention Matthew's name ever again.

Is that how a best friend is supposed to act? Why wasn't he affected by Matthew's death if they're really supposed to be close?

It's only now that he's facing Himmelmez and that he's being made to fight Matthew that he mentions the guy and tells us how they're supposedly best friends and this is the reason why he can't hurt the man. Doesn't this sound contrived and convenient for plot purposes (like the only reason this entire thing happened was so false drama could be created)?

Besides, we already know that Matthew is long dead and yet Chaos refuses to destroy the creature that looks like the guy. Why is that? Whether he kills this version of Matthew or not, it won't bring back the guy, so what difference does it make?

When things are seen with this kind of perspective, this whole scene with the main character having to fight his supposed best friend really seems contrived. Do you think that Chaos' supposed friendship with Matthew and how the 2 are supposedly best friends is believable or is this just something that has been made up on the spot (or so it seems) for plot-related purposes?
