What's Wrong With Frigg's Clue To Find Loki (Ragnarok Manhwa)?

ragnarok: into the abyss, manhwa, loki
The main characters of Ragnarok: Into The Abyss manhwa are tasked to find someone with their only clue being that this person is "human and not". What could possibly be wrong with said clue?

In Volume 3 of the graphic novel, the Norse queen of the gods and the mother of Balder, the goddess Frigg, shows up to talk to both Chaos and Fenris Fenrir.

As the trio talk, we find out that, apparently, the fate of the world rests on Chaos' shoulders and that he's the only one capable of saving said world.

Why this is the case, I have no idea. But, apparently and supposedly, this is his destiny. Yeah, right (insert eye-roll here?). Let's just forget that for now and get back to what this post is about.
ragnarok: into the abyss, manhwa, frigg
So, Frigg then says that before the main characters can get started with their quest, they first need to "find the one who is both human and not". The protagonists have no idea who this could possibly be. But the readers know that this statement refers to Loki thanks to the very helpful image of said assassin that appears right beside those words.

However, even if we know who the words refer to, we still don't know exactly how and why this is the case. Why is he considered the one who is human and not? How can he be both human and not? I suppose we'll just have to wait to find out when we get to that part of the story.

Well, that's what I would like to say, but, unfortunately, we got to the part of the plot where this should have been explained (when Loki meets up with Chaos and the others and ends up joining their party and it's revealed that he's the one they're looking for) and there is no explanation at all.

ragnarok: into the abyss, manhwa, chaos, frigg, fenris fenrir, goddess
This point is simply overlooked and glossed over, practically forgotten as no one bothers to question Loki.

Let's just go back to the trio's conversation before this baffles us further.

Frigg adds that they need to find this person because he's necessary for their success and survival, implying that the heroes will fail in their quest without this guy.

Frigg then says that she wishes she can say more, but, apparently, for some unknown reason, she just can't. Yeah, very believable, no?

Chaos then asks his mother how they can possibly find the one who is human and not. Frigg's answer is simply the word 'west'. Very helpful, no?

With Frigg's departure, the only thing our heroes are left with are the clues that they're supposed to head west. And therein lies the problem. Seriously, look at those supposed clues.

How can anyone even classify those as clues, much less helpful and useful clues? Let's start with the 'head west' clue. While it's good that the main characters don't have to search the entire world, the west isn't exactly a small area.

ragnarok: into the abyss, manhwa, loki, odin, frigg, asgard. norse mythology, gods, goddess
Frigg didn't even give them an address, just a general direction. How can that help them?

They could traverse the entirety of the western area of the world, but if they don't know exactly who they're looking for, well, how can they find that person then?

And that brings us to the 'human and not' clue. This might be the worst clue of them all. How are they expected to find Loki with such a clue?

It's not like the guy will be walking around with a sign helpfully informing our heroes who he is. What, are the protagonists going to walk around and ask everyone that they come across if said person is the one who is human and not?

Even if they get a response from people with such a question, how will they know that that person is telling the truth? You know that there's something really wrong with the clues and that said clues are really useless when you have one of the main characters agreeing with you.

In Volume 4 of the manhwa, Chaos, Fenris Fenrir and Iris Irine arrive in the city of Prontera. The trio have no idea how or even where to start looking for the one who is human and not. Fenris herself says, "I wish Frigg could have given us more of a clue" and "we don't even know what he looks like". That is exactly the point and the problem.

ragnarok: into the abyss, manhwa, fenris fenrir
So, with such clues, how did you think they were going to find Loki? What did you think was going to happen? To say the next scene was rather disappointing would be putting it mildly, to say the least.

With such less-than-helpful clues, it's no wonder that we had to have a deus ex machina in order to have the trio meet up with Loki. Perhaps that's the only term that can be used to describe what happened next. Why, you ask?

It's because the protagonists didn't even have a hard time finding the guy. You think they would have had a hard time especially considering the clues (if you could even call them that) they've been given.

But no. Instead of having a hard time, the person they're looking for is practically handed to them in a silver platter. That's how easily they were able to find him. And the whole 'human and not' clue didn't even factor into it. Or, to be more precise, that's how easily Loki found them.

If he hadn't found them, they most likely never would have been able to find him, not with such useless clues. But, if you really look at it, even the way the assassin found Chaos and the others could be said to be questionable and bordering on deus ex machina (actually, maybe it is really deus ex machina).

ragnarok: into the abyss, manhwa, loki, norse mythology
This is because of how easily he found the main characters; he didn't have reliable clues either. But that's discussed in another post, so, if you're interested, just check out the tags below and/or this post.

Anyway, Loki easily found Chaos just by seeing the symbol on the back of the latter's shirt. So, how ridiculous does that sound? After all, anyone could wear shirts with that symbol, no?

Besides, for all Loki knew, maybe Chaos just bought that shirt somewhere or maybe Chaos borrowed that from someone or something.

What do you think? Do you think that Frigg should have given the main characters useful and reliable clues in order to find Loki? Were you disappointed at how Chaos and the others met up with the assassin? What do you think is the meaning of the clue that Loki is both human and not?

Why Does Loki Help Chaos (Ragnarok Manhwa)?

Saturday, February 22, 2014
loki, chaos, ragnarok: into the abyss, manhwa, assassins guild
What reasons does Loki have in wanting to help out Chaos in Ragnarok: Into The Abyss manhwa?

This post is also known as "why and how does Loki suddenly end up being friends with Chaos and joining the protagonist's group?" The validity of the aforementioned question knows no bounds.

In order to easily be able to understand things, let's recap the events that have just transpired in the comic between Chaos and Loki.

Thanks to a misunderstanding caused by Skurai (let's not get into the ridiculousness of such a misunderstanding now as that's discussed in this post), Loki ended up believing that Chaos was the one who destroyed his beloved Assassins' Guild.
loki, chaos, ragnarok: into the abyss, manhwa
Readers know that the resident main character is innocent, but Loki is convinced of his guilt. When the 2 first meet, they end up fighting because of this. Skurai soon ends up joining the fight, but nothing is resolved as our heroes end up being imprisoned by the guards of Prontera and Loki and Skurai run off.

Later on, in Volume 5, we are surprised to see Loki showing up to help Chaos and his friends by giving their weapons back to them. The question 'why' does not begin to cover the craziness of this scene as Loki then suddenly says that he wants to join their group.

What in the world is going on? How did that happen? Why does Loki suddenly want to join the main characters? Didn't he want to destroy Chaos and make him pay for what the latter did to the Assassins' Guild? Didn't he want revenge for what had happened (never mind the fact that Chaos is innocent; we know that, but Loki doesn't)?

Loki isn't supposed to know the truth about this yet. If he does know the truth, then how does he suddenly know? Nothing is ever clarified, so we don't know for sure if Loki has found out who really destroyed the Assassins' Guild.

ragnarok: into the abyss, manhwa, chaos, assassins guild
Needless to say, because of that, this scene comes across as very unbelievable especially when you consider how the assassin was so mad at the protagonist just a few pages prior to that.

How does he go from wanting to get rid of the main character to wanting to help him? That doesn't make sense in the least.

Rather, that just adds to making this scene seem really contrived because there is just no rhyme or reason as to why and how this could have happened.

It's like this particular scene is just an excuse and it only happened so that Loki could join the group already. The really sad part is how we don't get anymore explanations. We get nothing satisfactory at all and it's like we're just expected to suspend our disbelief and start getting used to the fact that the assassin is now a part of the group of heroes and that's that. Unfortunately, that doesn't make this any less unbelievable.

Later on, we see how Loki and Chaos are starting to become good friends. Even though the 2 have some good dynamics with how they banter and act around each other, it's still so hard to believe that they're becoming friends because there is still the looming question of why and how this could have happened.

Perhaps if the 2 had actually talked to clear up the misunderstanding between them, then things would have been far more believable. Speaking of talking, how come Chaos isn't asking Loki about the whole Dragon Knights thing?

During the extremely and unbearably long fight scene between those 2, the protagonist wanted to know about the Dragon Knights so badly that he kept bugging the assassin about it.

dragon knights, chaos, fenris fenrir, ragnarok: into the abyss, manhwa
This is in spite of the fact that he could have asked Fenris Fenrir about this instead since she clearly knows all about this, having just explained some things for the benefit of Iris Irine and the readers.

And yet, now that the 2 men are working together and being all friendly with each other, why is it that Chaos isn't asking anymore questions about this?

It's almost like he just forgot all about the Dragon Knights. But why? Why wouldn't he take the opportunity to ask Loki about this now that it didn't seem like the assassin wanted to kill him?

Why do you think Loki suddenly wanted to help Chaos and join his group? Do you think it was believable that the assassin and the main character suddenly became friends? Do you think we should have gotten more of an explanation about all this?

What's To Dislike About The Chaos, Loki, And Skurai Fight (Ragnarok Manhwa)?

Thursday, February 13, 2014
skurai, loki, chaos, ragnarok: into the abyss, manhwa
Just what is there to dislike about the Chaos, Loki and Skurai fight in Ragnarok: Into The Abyss? What can be said to be so wrong and even annoying about this scene in the manhwa?

The fight between the 3 aforementioned characters happens in Volume 4 of the comic. One of the first things that can be said about this particular scene is that it's very, very, very long.

Those words might not even be enough to adequately describe things because this fight scene seemed like it would never end. Seriously, it just went on and on and on. It was such a drag.
chaos, loki, skurai, fight scene, ragnarok: into the abyss, manhwa
We first start with Loki and Chaos fighting one-on-one with each other in Chapter 32 of Volume 4. This fight scene goes on long enough that one has to wonder why our resident main character won't let Fenris Fenrir and Iris Irine help him when he's clearly on the losing side against the assassin.

Seriously, what are the readers supposed to think of our protagonist when he acts like that? Why won't he ask for help and why does he insist on trying to defeat Loki on his own when he's clearly having a hard time? This just prolongs their fight in such an unnecessary way.

Just when you think it can't get any worse, it actually does, because, when we get to Chapter 35 of the same Volume, Skurai shows up seemingly from out of nowhere. Why did he just suddenly show up? And why does he want to take on both Loki and Chaos at the same time? Wasn't his plan to let these 2 fight and then to take on Chaos when the hero's been weakened?

After all, isn't that the whole reason why he destroyed the Assassins' Guild (so he could blame all this on the protagonist, not that that makes sense, but that's what the graphic novel says anyway)? Unfortunately, it doesn't look like we'll be getting any answers to those questions any time soon as the 3 just get on with fighting each other and this scene gets even longer than it already is.

chaos, loki, skurai, ragnarok: into the abyss, manhwa, fight scene
Now that Chaos is fighting against 2 people, we once again have to wonder why Iris and Fenris aren't helping their friend. Two against one is certainly not fair even if Loki and Skurai are also fighting against each other.

Moreover, if the ladies are so concerned about innocent people dying and getting involved in this fight, then why aren't they doing anything about it?

Why are they so focused on watching this long and never-ending fight instead of helping all the people get away? They could be leading the people out of harm's way. They could ensure that no one will get hurt or get caught up in this 3-way fight.

More than that though, let's take a look at the people of Prontera who are around to watch this really long fight scene. If these people already saw that some of them died because of all the fighting, then what in the world are they still doing here?

Why are they still continuing to watch this annoying fight scene? They should have run away already before they end up getting involved in this and losing their lives. Seriously, what are they waiting for? Why are they watching this aggravating fight?

ragnarok: into the abyss, manhwa, loki, skurai, chaos
This is really something that warrants being asked especially when we later see that a little girl gets in the way of the Chaos, Loki and Skurai fight.

If all these people had left already, then that girl wouldn't have gotten in the way of the fight. After all, even others who weren't near the 3 currently embroiled in this match should have heard the sounds of fighting.

They should have known to get out of the way and not even approach the fighting trio. Is it supposed to be believable that a little girl suddenly shows up from out of nowhere (or so it seems) just to get in the way of the fight?

This just ends up coming across as unbelievable, not to mention contrived. What do you think? What are your thoughts on the fight between Chaos, Loki and Skurai? Do you wish that it ended sooner?

Why Is Loki Looking For Chaos (Ragnarok Manhwa)?

Saturday, January 11, 2014
loki, chaos, ragnarok: into the abyss, manhwa
Alternate titles for this post include 'the misunderstanding that should never have been or that doesn't make sense' and 'why you should never jump to conclusions?'.

What could be so wrong about having Loki search for Chaos in the Ragnarok: Into The Abyss manhwa?

The post title question is actually easily answered, but that doesn't mean that the answer is satisfactory or that it makes sense. To explain what that means, let's take a closer look at the aforementioned question.

In volume 3 of the manhwa, Skurai is brought to the headquarters of the Assassins' Guild by Odin's Beholders where he is subsequently convinced to destroy said guild.
loki, chaos, ragnarok: into the abyss, manhwa
The swordsman easily wins against an entire army of assassins with the help of his cursed sword (which really makes you wonder as to the purpose of the pages and pages of endless fight scenes. After all, if we already know that Skurai is going to win, then what's the point of drawing it out when the plot could have been advanced instead?).

We later find that Skurai planned to blame his crimes on Chaos (yeah, I don't know how that could possibly make sense either; I talk more about that in this post) with the help of Odin's Beholders. What happens is that the leader of the Assassins' Guild is given the name 'Chaos' when he asks for the identity of the attacking swordsman. As such, said leader writes down this name in blood before he dies.

When Loki and his other fellow assassins arrive at their headquarters in volume 4 of Ragnarok: Into The Abyss, they find everything in ruins and everyone dead. Of course, they also find the clue that had been left for them (or, to be more precise, the clue that had been left for Loki, because, really, it's obvious that he'll be the one to deal with this).

This now brings us back to the post title question as we now know that the reason Loki intends to go after Chaos is so that he could avenge his fallen comrades. That's all well and good, and, of course, the one responsible for destroying the guild should be held accountable for his crimes.

chaos, loki, assassins guild, ragnarok: into the abyss, manhwa
The problem is with the clue that had been left for Loki. The clue is simply the word 'chaos' written in blood. Could anyone really consider that a reliable clue?

In the first place, who said that 'chaos' was the name of a person? It could be talking about something else entirely especially since 'Chaos' ins't exactly a common name (if you could even consider it as such because, really, who would name their child 'Chaos'?) .

Moreover, even if the clue was talking about a person's name, exactly how does Loki expect to find this person?

As mentioned, this isn't a common name, so how does the assassin expect to find the killer of his comrades with the only clue (the supposed clue is seeming more and more useless by the minute) he was left with?

What, is he going to go around asking people for their names? Why would people even tell him their names assuming that is Loki's plan? And, should he actually meet Chaos, why would he tell the assassin his name? Unfortunately, it doesn't look like the assassins even pondered this at all.

They seemed utterly sure that Chaos was the name of the one that had destroyed their beloved guild. I suppose it's only to be expected, especially considering how easy it was for Loki to have known where to find his target (seriously, how exactly does this divination thing work and are we really expected to believe that it's that simple? Perhaps if things were explained a bit more, then it would have been more believable).

loki, chaos, ragnarok: into the abyss, manhwa
Regrettably, no explanations are given and it doesn't look like we'll get answers anytime soon (if at all) since we move straight to Chapter 31 of Volume 4 wherein Loki finds Chaos.

Before that though, what questions can we ask regarding said incident?

  • How will the assassin find his target?
  • What kind of cool spell or item or ritual or whatever is he going to use to find the one he's looking for?
  • He's probably going to have a hard time because his only clue is practically useless and unreliable.
  • If he's not going to ask people for their names, then what is he going to do?
  • Is he just going to wander around until he finds the right person?

Loki didn't seem to have had a hard time at all though (it might have been better if he did have a difficult time, so it would have seemed more believable and plausible) since he easily spots Chaos thanks to whatever's written on the back of the latter's shirt.

No, I don't know how that is supposed to be believable. I mean, what if there are other people who also have shirts similar to Chaos'? What if Chaos decided to change his shirt (considering how many of the characters later get an unexplained makeover, this is a valid reason for concern)?

skurai, ragnarok: into the abyss, manhwa, assassins guild
How does Loki know that he found the right person just by noting whatever was written on the back of that person's shirt? He seemed really sure about his assumption too since he was quick to start attacking.

We don't get an explanation about all this though. Instead, we just find out, in Chapter 32 of the same volume, that the character 'rain' is what's written on Chaos' garment.

Wouldn't you say that that makes things even more unbelievable?

It would have been much better if whatever was written on Chaos' shirt was something uncommon because, as it is, rain is so common that it's so easy to think and believe that many other people would be wearing outfits that have that symbol.

Do you think that Loki should have had a harder time in finding the resident main character? Do you think that the clues given to the assassin were pretty much useless and unreliable? Do you wish that the manhwa had better explained these things so that they would appear more believable?
